Vergil Ortiz in Midst of Controversy and World Title Talks

The last 48 hours has been a whirlwind of events for the 154-pound undefeated world title prospect. Vergi Ortiz of Grand Prairie scored a first-round TKO of Fredrick Lawson that appeared to many observers. An inappropriate stoppage in the estimation of the boxing world. The win moved Ortiz's record to 20-0 (20), and marked his first win in a year and a half and his first above the welterweight limit. Following the controversial win, Ortiz called out WBO Junior Middleweight champion Tim Tszyu. The Texans promoter said he would get to work, and the fight was a real possibility. Multiple reports today that the two parties are discussing a fight this year.

In other news relating to the quick stoppage in Saturday's fight, referee Tony Weeks said he stopped the fight early because Fredrick Lawson had a brain aneurysm. According to the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). Weeks explained the stoppage by saying, “[I]t came up that he had an aneurysm, and they did a test again, and the same aneurysm came up. Another doctor was brought in and gave him the same examination, and he tested negative for the aneurysm, so they cleared him to fight.” Those claims were immediately refuted by both the promoter and the commission.

According to BoxingScene.com, Lawson was tested twice. Neither test produced anything that would jeopardize the fight. It is also not uncommon for a commission to request follow-up testing if anything on an initial examination is attention-catching. Informing Weeks of the details surrounding Lawson's license approval and/or medical condition would be a HIPAA violation.

Kid Austin and DFG Come Up Clutch in Clutch City

Two of the Lone Star State's brightest prospects showed out last night in Houston. "Kid Austin'' Floyd Schofield of Austin, and Kileen Native, "DFG '' Darius Fulghum both came up clutch in H-Town on the Ryan Garcia vs Oscar Durate undercard. The main card was kicked off by 27-year-old Fulghum, who blasted out Pachino Hill in just two rounds. Fulghum improved his record to 9-0 (9). DFG, a super middleweight, does not describe himself as a puncher but has been able to stop all his opponents inside the distance. The Killeen native had a brilliant amateur career and is ready for a massive step up in 2024. He recently signed with Golden Boy and could be prepared for a fight with Munguia, who has sold well in Texas multiple times. With another win or two against increasingly difficult opposition, Fulghum could be ready for Munguia, and it would be a massive draw anywhere in the Lone Star State.

In the evening's co-main event, Schofield continued to show why he was our 2022 Prospect of the Year and why he could be closing in on something massive in 2024. Kid Austin moved to 16-0 (12). The 21-year-old from the republic's Capital City scored four knockdowns in the opening round to stop Tijuana’s Ricardo Lopez 1:51 into the opening round. Lopez opted to stand in front of the blue-chip prospect, who connected with a left hook that dropped the Mexican less than a minute into the bout. Schofield dropped Lopez again with the left hook 20 seconds later and the fight should have been stopped there. However, Lopez was allowed to continue, and the Texan unleashed a barrage of pin-point power shots that dropped Lope two more times until referee Joe Rodriguez finally waved off the massacre and gave Schofield his 12th knockout. Golden Boy promotes both Schofield and former world champ Jo Jo Diaz and may look to put each other in the ring together early in 2024.

Darius Fulghum Takes His Talent To Golden Boy Promotions

"DFG" Darius Fulghum, a Houston resident who grew up mostly in Killen, is "Destined For Greatness," and he will take his talents to Golden Boy Promotions. The undefeated Super Middleweight has been featured on several Golden Boy cards in 2023. He has been on three of the promotion cards for the last six months, going 3-0 (3) to improve his record to 8-0 (8). He has now agreed to a promotional deal with the Oscar de la Hoya-run company. Golden Boy decided to air his last bout on their main card, and DFG shined!! He stepped up to the occasion and scored a sensational first-round KO of Alan Campa. Campa had just gone the distance with youted prospects Junior Younan, Erik Baninyan, and D'Mitrius Ballard. Campa had been tested by many of the top names from 154 pounds up to 168. A single left hook to the liver ended the night for Campa, and Fulghum extended his KO streak to 8.

Fulghum is excited to be signed by one of the premier boxing promoters in the world, Golden Boy Promotions, and grateful for the managerial work done by 3 PM, his managerial company. “I’m extremely excited to be with Golden Boy,” Fulghum commented. “Oscar (de la Hoya) can push me to new heights. He can get me in big fights. Golden Boy has pushed me out there (on DAZN streams), and I’m relaxed fighting in front of people. I do have to thank 3 PM. They really saved my career. They’ve done an excellent job and are the most professional people I’ve ever worked with."

Houston Native and World Champ Marlen Esparza Stays with Golden Boy

Houston native Marlen Esparza was the first woman Golden Boy Promotions ever signed all the way back in 2016. The 33-year-old world flyweight champ will remain with Golden Boy. The official details of the contract have not been released. However, Esparza and Golden Boy have made the news official, “I'm with Golden Boy, who has been my day one. I'm doing what I love with great compensation and have opportunities to become undisputed as a flyweight and unify in other weight divisions. Thank you, Golden Boy!"

Esparza has a professional record of 13-1 (1) and holds the WBA, WBC, and Ring Magazine titles at 112-pounds. She last fought on the Co-main event of Ortiz-McKinson back on august 6th in Fort Worth. She captured a unanimous decision over Eva Guzman. Esparza has mentioned on multiple occasions that she prioritizes unifying all the belts at flyweight, as opposed to trying to revenge her lone defeat to Seniesa Estrada. A fan-friendly all-action fight that was stopped prematurely and went to the scorecards due to a gruesome headbutt back in late 2019. The other two belts in the weight class are held by 13-0 Gabriela Celeste Alaniz and Leonela Paola Yudica (17-0-3), both of Argentina.

Esparza has made history multiple times. In 2012 she became the first woman boxer to qualify for the USA boxing team. A decade later, she became the first Female Ring Magazine Flyweight champion. A belt she has described as her favorite.

Josh Franco Becomes Promotional Free Agent

WBA Super Flyweight champion Joshua "El Profesor " Franco is now a free agent. He parted ways with long-time promoter Golden Boy Promotions. Franco has been inactive for roughly a year since defeating Andrew Moloney via unanimous decision in August 2021, a performance he and trainer Robert Garcia said was the best performance of his young and blossoming career. Franco was later mandated by the WBA to fight the sanctioning bodies Super champion Juan Francisco Estrada. The Estrada-Franco fight went to purse bids and was won by Golden Boy. Estrada has opted to not take the fight and vacate his "Super Champion" title. That news broke roughly two weeks ago and left Franco without a fight. Franco held the WBA world title since 2020 when he won the strap from Moloney in their first of three fights. The fight was held during the height of COVID in the Top Rank Bubble in June of 2020. He has defended his belt once against Moloney, a fight that was declared a NC after a head butt in the opening round broke Franco's orbital bone. The injury caused the fight to be stopped and called to a halt after the second round. He then set the record straight in June of 2021 and dominated Moloney in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in August of 2021.

He was in line for a mega fight with one of the legends of the 115-pound division, a title held by the Legendary "Choclatito" Roman Gonzalez. The belt then went to Estrada, who picked up a controversial decision over Chocolatito in March of last year at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. Franco was supposed to fight the winner of the rematch, but the rematch kept running into delays, which included each fighter testing positive for COVID. Gonzalez tested positive back in September of 2021, which set the fight back. Estrada then tested positive earlier this year, and that fight was off. Estrada was replaced by Julio Cesar Martinez. That set up the purse bids for Estrada-Franco and delivered Franco the mega fight that had eluded him. However, Estrada has opted to vacate his version of the WBA belt. Leaving Franco without an opponent.

The news that Franco had separated from his long-time promoter had circulated on the internet. It was confirmed on Facebook by Franco's dad Jesse Rodriguez, who posted "Finally a Free Agent" the thought amongst pundits and fans is that Franco will go ahead and sign with Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing. The promotional outfit which represents Franco's little brother and WBC super flyweight champ Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez. The hope there is that Hearn could put on mega fights headlining the two brothers that could pack out the Alamodome.

Emerging Dallas Based Brothers Back in Action

Houston native Jermall Charlo holds the WBC middleweight title while his twin brother Jermell holds three-quarters of the brass at 154. Brothers dominating is no longer an oddity in boxing, especially if those brothers come from the Lone Star State. San Antonio is home to WBA Super Flyweight champ Josh Franco and his brother Bam Rodriguez, our prospect of the year 2020, is very likely to join his big brother as a world champion in the very near future. So both H-town and Alamo City each have brothers dominating the scene. So, what about Big D?

Enter the Rincon brothers. Dallas has a pair of undefeated brothers that are hard-hitting, blue-chip prospects that certainly have all the makings of world champions. Big brother George is an 11-0 junior welterweight and little brother Alex is a 6'3 (8-0) junior middleweight. Both are southpaws and both and both are in action this Saturday at the Star in Frisco on the Vergil Ortiz vs Egidijus Kavaliauskas card. The pair haven't fought on the same card in two years. When on the undercard of Vergil Ortiz- Antonio Orozco at The Verizon Theatre in Grand Praire when both men scored a sensational second-round knockout for their hometown fans.

Since then both have taken an interesting path, both men looked to be in their grove and on their way from transitioning from prospect to contender status. When Alex hit a string of bad luck. He was twice scheduled to fight, and each time the fight got called off. First, an opponent missed weight but 20 pounds, and then a hand injury got him scratched from a January 2020 card in San Antonio.  A card that George scored a sensational first-round knockout over Diego Vicente Perez. Following the knockout, Rincon suffered an odd medical event which caused him to pass out. Everything ended up ok and medically Rincon was fine. He was also garnering a lot of media attention and being recognized as a premier prospect at the 140-pound division. The pandemic followed shortly thereafter and delayed things a year for George. Despite being sidelined for reasons out of their control both brothers bounced back spectacular in Q1 2021. Alex scored a six-round unanimous decision at the Amerian Airlines Center in which he won every single round on each card. George then bounced back in March at the Dickies Arena in March on the Ortiz-Hooker card and captured an eight-round UD in which he won every round as well.

The Rincon bros certainly have a ways to go till they become world champions or even get into the title picture. However, both brothers have the skills and a path to get there. Alex is a 6'3 southpaw with real pop who can out-jab and outbox his opponents on the inside and can beat them up on the inside. He has a style and a skill set that makes him a massive challenge for anyone and being in a division where the best are willing to fight the best and take on all comers Alex can move into a title picture rather quickly. George is 11-0 and probably closer to moving from prospect into contender territory a win Saturday night will go a long way in helping him get there. A southpaw, master boxer-puncher with a deep amateur pedigree and very good pop for the division. George has everything you would look for in a world champion and at 29-years-old is already in his physical prime and can be moved along quickly. This couldn't happen at a better time for the elder brother. In his division, all four major world titles are held by one man, Josh Taylor,  who may vacate all four of those belts in the next year or so. in favor of moving up to 147 to chase bigger paydays. That would open up real opportunities for Rincon and all of the young talent in the weight class to fight for a world title much quicker than expected.
