Marlen Esparza

Schofield Remains Undefeated, Esparza Picks Up Third Flyweight Strap in San Antonio

At just 20 years old, Floyd Schofield got a huge opportunity to substitute in for Vergil Ortiz as the main event at the At&t Center in San Antonio. He was not about to let opportunity was not about to slip away with just a so-so performance. "Kid Austin" was going to fight and, was going to make the most of this opportunity. Schofield got to work early, staggering Haskell Rhodes in the first with a rapid-fire combination landing on the button. He did the same in the second. It appeared his opponent was a sitting duck, and it was going to be a short night. However, Rhodes was determined to survive the night, and beginning in round three, he went into survival mode. Schofield, who was levels ahead, slammed on the gas. A right hand buckled the outmatched opponent 45 seconds into the third. It became obvious immediately that Rhodes was in over his head as the Austinite was sharp and active. Landing with laser-like precision with the left hook that snapped his opponent's head back again with under a minute to go in the third. By round four Rhodes was clearly fixed on simply surviving and had given up trying to win. The end looked to be drawing in quickly in the seventh as Schofield unleashed a left hook that dropped his opponent. Rhodes beat the count but was quickly planted back on the canvas by a whirlwind of power shots. Rhodes remained on a knee and appeared to be finished. However, he decided at the last possible second to stand up and continue fighting. The onslaught carried over into the next round. Schofield pushed to close the show with a knockout. Pressing his wounded foe. A left hook caught Rhodes flush again and again dropped Rhodes, who once again beat managed to be at the count. The ninth saw a nasty cut open up below the eye of Schofield, who was immediately taken to the doctor to have the cut examined. Schofield told the doctor not to stop the fight, and the doctor obliged, allowing Schofield to go out and finish the 10-rounder and take a completely lopsided UD by scores of 100-87X3. Following the fight, the victorious Texan said, "I ain't gonna lie, the man can take a hell of a punch. I didn't think he was gonna survive the first knockdown... I want Keyshawn Davis, send the contract." Following the fight, Golden Boy President Eric Gomez and Golden Boy Business Partner Bernard Hopkins expressed interest in making a Schofield-Jo Jo Diaz fight for the fourth quarter of this year.

Also on the card was fan-favorite women's unified flyweight champ Marlen Esparza of Houston. Esparza successfully picked up her third flyweight strap by taking a majority decision over Gabriela Alaniz of Argentina, who entered the night as the WBO flyweight champ. Alaniz was hyper-aggressive and fired over 600 punches, but Esparza's reflexes and defensive skills forced Alniz to misfire on about 80% of those. The Houstonite made Alaniz pay early and often with counter right hands that landed with accuracy. Alaniz did her best impression of the Energizer bunny and kept going and going and without tiring, and by the eighth round seemed to have evened up the fight up on the cards and had Esparza throwing limited shots and just one at a time. With the momentum shifting into the hands of the Argentine, Esparza found a second wind. She shifted her attack downstairs and worked the body of the WBO champ, slowing her down and setting up a big 10th for the Texan. That final rally sealed the deal. Esparza took a majority decision by scores of 97-93, an outrageous 99-91, and Lisa Giampa handed in an even draw of 95-95. It appears Esparza will get her wish and could land IBF flyweight Champ Arely Mucino. Golden Boy promotes both, Esparza and Mucino, and the fight seems likely for this year. Esparza has prioritized unifying all the belts at 122 over exacting a controversial loss to Seniesa Estrada.

Vergil Ortiz out again, San Antonio Card Will Still Go On.

The Eimantas Stanionis VS Eimantas Stanionis WBA "Regular" World Title fight seems to be cursed. The fight, was scheduled for Saturday, July 8th, at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, is off again. This is the third time the bout was pushed back and maybe off altogether. It was originally scheduled for March 28th. However, Stanioins had to pull out due to appendicitis. That required an emergency appendectomy. The bout was rescheduled for April 29th in Arlington, and that fight date was pushed back, when Ortiz, a Grand Prairie native, suffered a flare-up of his previously diagnosed rhabdomyolysis. The fight was then moved to Saturday in Alamo City and is now possibly off. The Texan, was hospitalized after passing out.

Ortiz's promoter, Oscar de la Hoya, expressed concern for his best fighter saying, "This is the third time we are very concerned." However insisted that Ortiz was "OK" and was told that "Doctors said he will make a full recovery and fight again." The promoter also suggested that his undefeated welterweight maybe moving-up from 147 pounds to 154 pounds.

The card will still go on and is loaded with Texas talent. It will now be headlined by 20-year-old phenom Floyd Schofield of Austin, 14-0 (8), who will battle with Haskell Rhodes in a 10-round lightweight affair. Also, Houston native and unified Flyweight champ Marlen Esparza will look to add another strap when she battles Gabriela Celeste Alaniz of Argentina. Texas-based prospect Tristian Kalkreuth 10-1 (7) of Duncanville, and Darius Fulghum, 5-0 (5) of Houston, will all be featured on the Texas-centric card.

Vergil Ortiz and Marlen Esparza Likely to Return July 8, Possibly in San Antonio

Saturday's Golden Boy Card on the grounds of UT Arlington was supposed to showcase world title fights, including Grand Prairie native Vergil Oritz plus unified women's Flyweight champ Marlen Esparza of Houston. However, both those fights have been axed. Ortiz's title fight with WBA 'regular' world title holder Eimantas Stanionis was called-off when Ortiz suffered a flare-up of Rhabdomyolysis, a serious medical condition he was diagnosed with last year before his original fight date with Michael McKinson in the first quarter of 2022.

Esparza, who holds the WBA and WBC Flyweight titles, was supposed to meet up with WBO champ "La Chucky '' Gabriela Celeste Alaniz of Argentina. That fight fell through as Alaniz's visa was not processed and approved in time. According to Golden Boy president Eric Gomez, there's nothing legally holding it up, and there's no reason to think the Visa won't be approved. It "just takes time," and it took more time than expected, and they ran out of time.

Both these fights will likely be rescheduled for July 8th and possibly in San Antonio at the AT&T Center. Golden Boy originally planned to keep the card in the DFW area but had trouble finding a venue according to Gomez. They have done well in San Antonio, and it's still in Ortiz's and Esparza's home state. The Alamo City has been particularly friendly to Esparza. She scored two consecutive wins in the Alamo City in 2021-22. She picked up two lopsided decisions. First over Anabel Ortiz at the AT&T Center in late 2021. The Houstonian then scored one of the most important wins of her impressive career by outpointing Naoko Fujioka in a unification bout in which Esparza also became the first ever Ring Magazine Women's Flyweight Champ at the Alamodome on the undercard of Ryan Garcia VS Emmanuel Tagoe in front of a crowd of nearly 15,000 fans.

Esparza's April 29th Unification Bout Is Off

Houston native and unified flyweight title Marlen Esparza has long prioritized becoming the undisputed flyweight champ and unifying all the belts. She ranked this achievement above avenging her lone defeat and settling the score with pound-for-pound elite Seniesa Estrada. Esparza was scheduled to get one step closer to that goal and attempt to add the WBO strap to the WBA and WBC belts she already owns. However, that dream will have to wait a bit longer. Esparaza was scheduled to face undefeated WBO champ, Gabriela Celeste Alaniz, 14-0 (6) of Argentina. Alaniz has not yet received the necessary documentation to travel to the U.S. This has forced Golden Boy Promotions to drop the bout, which was planned for April 29, at College Park Center on the grounds of the UT Arlington campus.

The unification showdown may still happen in the not-so-distant future. Golden Boy is potentially eyeing June or July. Possibly on the card that will feature the return of Grand Prairie native Vergil Ortiz, who was also forced off the card due to a flare-up of rhabdomyolysis. A condition he was diagnosed with last year.

Esparza currently sports a 13-1 (1) record and last fought in Fort Worth at the Dickies arena on the undercard of Vergil Ortiz VS Michael Mckinson. The Houstonian scored a unanimous decision victory over Eva Guzman back in August.

Houston Native and World Champ Marlen Esparza Stays with Golden Boy

Houston native Marlen Esparza was the first woman Golden Boy Promotions ever signed all the way back in 2016. The 33-year-old world flyweight champ will remain with Golden Boy. The official details of the contract have not been released. However, Esparza and Golden Boy have made the news official, “I'm with Golden Boy, who has been my day one. I'm doing what I love with great compensation and have opportunities to become undisputed as a flyweight and unify in other weight divisions. Thank you, Golden Boy!"

Esparza has a professional record of 13-1 (1) and holds the WBA, WBC, and Ring Magazine titles at 112-pounds. She last fought on the Co-main event of Ortiz-McKinson back on august 6th in Fort Worth. She captured a unanimous decision over Eva Guzman. Esparza has mentioned on multiple occasions that she prioritizes unifying all the belts at flyweight, as opposed to trying to revenge her lone defeat to Seniesa Estrada. A fan-friendly all-action fight that was stopped prematurely and went to the scorecards due to a gruesome headbutt back in late 2019. The other two belts in the weight class are held by 13-0 Gabriela Celeste Alaniz and Leonela Paola Yudica (17-0-3), both of Argentina.

Esparza has made history multiple times. In 2012 she became the first woman boxer to qualify for the USA boxing team. A decade later, she became the first Female Ring Magazine Flyweight champion. A belt she has described as her favorite.

Zurdo Shines in San Antonio

The main event between Yunieski Gonzalez of Cuba and Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramirez of Mexico at the AT&T Center delivered a fight-of-the-year candidate. It featured an action-packed first round where Gonzalez rocked Ramirez with a right hand just seconds into the fight. However, the southpaw Ramierz came charging back scoring with left hands and right hooks in the final seconds of the round to even things up. Gonzalez stepped back on the gas and fired off combinations forcing the undefeated Mexican backward, behand a snappy jab Ramirez was able to get inside of the charging Gonzalez and land uppercuts and solid body shots. If the action was good through the first six minutes, which it was, it really got going in round three where each man traded power shots against the ropes with Zurdo getting the better work landing a massive left that shook the Cuban just before the bell. Gonzalez came out aggressive in the fourth landing solid straight right hands but a left hook from Ramirez landed on the button and rocked Gonzalez. The two exchanged for the remainder of the round with the Mexican getting the better work in and having Gonzalez on the brink at the end of the fourth round with the referee looking in closely. Gonzalez was not deterred as he rallied back and had Zurdo in trouble midway through the fifth, unleashing heavy artillery while his opponent laid with his back to the ropes. The frenzied pace kept up for the remainder of the fight, which came in the 10th. as a right hook about took Gonzalez's head off and left him out on his feet and defenseless as Zurdo began teeing off on the Cuban who was helpless against the ropes and brought referee Rafael Ramos in to waive the bout off midway through the 10th giving Ramirez his 43rd win in 43 fight and 29th KO.

In the co-main event, Seniesa Estrada defended her WBA 105-pound strap against unbeaten Maria Santizo of Guatemala City, Guatemala City. After finding the distance Estrada exploded in the third Estrada tied a perfect left hook that went over a shot from Dantizo and put her down and nearly out. She courageously got to her feet and was nearly dropped again after a straight right buckled her sending her telling into the ropes. After landing a vicious left hook early in the fourth that rocked the Guatemalan she finished the job moments later with yet another picture-perfect left hook that sent her opponent crushing to the canvas1:51 of round number four. Moving her record to 22-0 (9)

The undercard featured two Texans of note Marlen Esparza of Houston not only defended her WBC Flyweight title and put on a show controlling the action and making Ortiz miss wildly, a barrage of head movement at the end of the first round that was Pernell Whitaker-esque. She then scored a knockdown in the second. Remaining in control she continued to use swift lateral movement to get in and out on Ortiz she scored a second knockdown in the fourth and remained in control throughout begins a snappy jab and excellent footwork kept her out of the way of Ortiz's return fire. The Houston native cruised to a wide decision victory by scores of 100-88, 99-90, and an extremely interesting and much to close  95-94-94.

The other Texan on the card didn't fare as well. Kendo "Tremendo" Castaneda, the lone San Antonian on the card was just "a step or two behind" as famed trainer "Jesse" James Leija said. He fought competitively against undefeated prospect Raul Curiel and after an early knockdown rallied in the fifth and sixth rounds. However, it wasn't enough and in the seventh Curiel landed a crushing body shot that dropped Castaneda for the 10-count and some. Handing Curiel has 11th win in 11 fights.

Big Time Boxing Returns to San Antonio

Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramirez has called Texas his "second home" he has fought in Galveston Island, Corpus Christ, the RGV, and previously in San Antonio in recent years. He has built up a loyal fan base and has become a draw here in the Lose Star State. He will return to San Antoni on Saturday to battle with hard-hitting Cuban contender Yunieski Gonzalez 21-3 (17). Gonzalez is certainly a worthy opponent but is certainly the B-side and a sizeable underdog to the 42-0 (28) Ramirez, who has bigger plans after this fight. The winner will be mandatory for WBA light heavyweight champ Dmitry Bivol, a fight that Ramirez is already looking forward to saying "Bivol is my number one target since he's been calling me out and publicly announcing that he's ready, thanks to the WBA and Mr. Gilberto Mendoza, this fight is the eliminator and he'll have no choice but to face me or vacate the belt."

The card features an intriguing co-main and a stacked undercard. The co-main is an intriguing woman's scrap between pound for pound elite and is headlined by  WBA mini weight titleholder Seniesa Estrada, who puts her belts and perfect 21-0 (8) against undefeated Guatemalan contender Maria Micheo Santizo 9-0 (5). Also on the undercard is the NABA super featherweight title as former world title challenger Lamont Roach looks to continue his two-fight win streak against former super featherweight world titleholder Rene Alvarado of Nicaragua. In which will be an intriguing contrast of style, both fighters like to come forward and mi it up combined with Roach's new found power this fight promises to deliver non-stop action.

Two Texans are on the card as well. As Marlen Esparza, 10-1 (1)  of Houston puts her WBC women's flyweight title on the line against Anabel Ortiz, 31-4 (4) of Mexico in a highly anticipated showdown.  Ortiz last fought in Texas, dropping a 10-round decision to Estrada at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth. Also, is the return of fan-favorite San Antonio native Kendo "Tremendo" Castaneda who looks to snap a four-fight slide and pick up the NABF welterweight title as he battles undefeated prospect, Raul Curiel in a 10 round affair.

The card starts at 3:30CST, with Norfolk, Virginia, native, Nicholas Sullivan kicks off the action and is aired on Golden Boy's Facebook page with commentary from there Rincon Brothers (Alex & George) of Carrolton. The fight then moves to DAZN at 8PM CST.
